The standard deduction is a specific dollar amount that reduces your taxable income. For the 2022 tax year, the standard deduction is $25,900 for joint filers, $19,400 for heads of household, and $12,950 for single filers and those married filing separately. For 2023 (taxes filed in 2024), the standard deduction will increase to $27,700 for joint filers, $20,800 for heads of household, and $13,850 for single filers and those married filing separately.
How the standard deduction works
Even if you have no other qualifying deductions or tax credits, the IRS lets you take the standard deduction on a no-questions-asked basis. The standard deduction reduces the amount of income you have to pay taxes on.
